Preventative Botox 101: Everything You Need to Know

Posted December 21, 2023 in Botox

Have you ever questioned why some faces take light years longer to age than others? Of course, great skin care, genetics, and environmental factors contribute, but when performed carefully and artistically, preventative Botox® can too.

Botox (botulinum toxin) is a popular injectable that temporarily reduces or eliminates facial fine lines and wrinkles. According to the National Institutes of Health, botulinum toxin type A is the most common cosmetic procedure globally.

Botox can also slow the formation of new lines by preventing the contraction of facial muscles.

What is Botox Cosmetic?

According to an article by Botox, OnabotulinumtoxinA was FDA-approved for therapeutic use in 1989 and rebranded as Botox in 2002 as a simple, safe, and effective treatment for:

  • Eliminating forehead wrinkles
  • Lifting and arching the brows
  • Eradicating frown lines and crow’s feet
  • Treating excessive underarm perspiration

If you are worried about any of these, ask The Medical Spa if Botox is right for you.

How Does Botox Cosmetic Work?

According to Healthline, Botox works by temporarily blocking nerve signals and muscle contractions, improving the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes and between the eyebrows. Botox can also slow the formation of new lines by preventing the contraction of facial muscles.

Although there is no correct age to start Botox treatments, we recommend patients wait until their mid to late 20s before starting preventative Botox.

This procedure is straightforward and usually takes 10 minutes. Before your treatment, you’ll have a consultation, and our expert team at The Medical Spa is happy to answer any questions you may have.

What are the Benefits?

The answer is simple—it combats signs of early aging and helps with excessive sweating. Here are six more benefits.

  1. The results are more subtle. Give yourself an advantage. Manage wrinkles sooner rather than later. Your smooth face will thank you.
  2. You won’t break the bank. Deeper wrinkles equal more treatments. Addressing them earlier saves money.
  3. Fewer office visits. Need we say more? Not only is it cost-effective, you can save time, too! Most Botox results last three to four months.
  4. It’s minimally invasive. You’ll find comfort in knowing this procedure takes place at our office. You may feel some slight discomfort during the injections, but it only lasts a few minutes.
  5. No downtime is required. You’ll resume normal activities the minute you leave your appointment.
  6. Botox doesn’t require incisions or general anesthesia. A topical anesthetic or ice numbs the treatment area if you are worried about pain or discomfort.

Although there is no correct age to start Botox treatments, we recommend patients wait until their mid to late 20s before starting preventative Botox.

What are the Risks and Side Effects?

Like any procedure, there are potential risks and side effects. Minor bruising or discomfort may occur post-Botox, but we’re happy to report that it improves within a few days. Other side effects might include:

  • Swelling or drooping in the eyelid area
  • Fatigue
  • Headache

  • Double vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Rash
  • Itching

If any of these occur, please contact your provider immediately.
